P.5m alloted
Cebu City will spend nearly half a million for the Mayor Tommy Osmeña Sinulog Invitational Cup, which will open on Jan. 23 at the Cebu Coliseum.
Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Jonathan Guardo said the City has appropriated P478,000 for the event, which will include foreign teams and import-laden local squads.
This as Cebu City Council’s Committee on Games, Amusement and Professional Sports chairman Councilor Jack Jakosalem and his vice chairman Councilor Yayoy Alcoseba have started inviting teams from China, South Korea, North Cotabato and the United Regional Basketball League (URBL) for the competition.
“The foreign teams, especially China, are hard to beat that’s why we will reinforce our team with foreign imports,” said Alcoseba, who will coach URBL team ML Kwarta Padala Cebu City in the tournament.
Other teams joining are URBL’s Ilocos Sur Snipers and the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier squad.
Two more
Jakosalem said they plan to hold one or two more basketball tournaments this year that might also include collegiate teams.
“Cebu is the center for basketball in the south, and I think that we should do the initiative to organize these projects,” said Jakosalem.
The budget will be spent for billeting, officiating, operations and venues. The foreign teams will be billeted at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
The Sinulog Invitational Cup is co-organized by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP).
Last year’s Mayor’s Cup drew commercial teams such as Osaka-Sherilin, M. Lhuillier, Skygo, General Milling Corp. and Tribu Sugbu in the Open division, while most Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) teams joined in the Collegiate division. (KIP)
