Aquino, Navarro clinch title

Ramon Aquino and Purisimo Navarro swept their respective finals matches to clinch the 1st Portside Sinulog Badminton Open 2005 Class A crown at the Portside Badminton Plaza yesterday.

The duo scored an easy 15-10, 15-7 win over Albert Bergantin and Marlon Martinez.

In Class C, the young Kiddo Beltrano teamed up with Charles Marigonen to take the title with an 8-15, 15-8, 15-13 win over Elizabeth Beron and Charles Luspo.

Leveling the match with a second-set win, Beltrano and Marigonen found themselves down 1-4 in the decider before rallying to level the match at 4-all.

Beron and Luspo fought back to a 11-10 lead, but Beltrano’s timely drop shots and quick smashes saw them nab the lead, 13-11, en route to the win.

In the Women’s Class B battle, Allain Arias and Giselle Solivas scored an overwhelming 15-7, 15-10 win over Carla Cordova and Diko Ong to rack up the championship.

Arias’ nifty drop shots and smashes allowed them to build a 13-2 lead in the first set before allowing Ong and Cordova to fight back, 13-7. Arias and Solivas made sure it was the closest their opponents would get, winning the next two points to take the set.

In the second set, Ong and Cordova raced to a 6-3 advantage before losing touch as Arias and Solivas rallied back to seal their win.

Over 50 pairs saw action in the two-day event organized by Michelle Fernandez, Anna Marie Pages and Sheramie Soreach-Leung of Solution Wise Production and Promotions. (ML)
