Jurao eliminates Quiñones, 6-4, 6-4 By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
ARVIN Jurao had lady luck on his side as he booted out top-seed Michael Quiñones, 6-4, 6-4, in yesterday’s semifinal round of the Atan Guardo Men’s Open at the Pardo Tennis Club.
Jurao will meet second-seed Bo Alburo, who defeated Roy Tabotabo, in the finals scheduled on Monday at 3 p.m.
Reserve racket
Seeded third, Jurao was erratic and trailed the top-seed, 2-4, in the first set before Quiñones had to go to his reserve racket after his string broke.
With the change of racket, the match’s momentum also changed as Jurao broke Quiñones’ serve twice and kept his to take the set, 6-4.
It was the same story in the second set as the top-seed raced to 4-2 lead before losing his touch to allow Jurao to come back.
In the other semifinal, Alburo had to dig deep into his arsenal as he found himself trailing, 4-5, with Tabotabo on serve in the first.
Alburo saved a set point and went on to break Tabotabo’s serve to level the match and took the next two games for a 7-5 set win.
“They had a lively exchanged of shots and it seemed to have zapped Tabotabo’s strength,” tournament organizer Fritz Tabura said.
In the second set, Tabotabo was nowhere near his previous form as he dropped a 6-2 set to bow out of contention.
The Jurao-Alburo final is scheduled on Monday with the Guardo brothers, Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Jonathan and Sambag I Barangay Captain Jerry watching.
