UC wins overall title

THE University of Cebu Arnis team flexed its muscles as it took the overall crown of the 1st Sinulog International Arnis Championships Friday at the Elizabeth Mall.

Led by playing-coach Maximo Caballes, UC took four golds, three silvers and one bronze in the one-day affair, which attracted fighters from South Korea, Switzerland and the United States.

Caballes topped the Open Senior heavyweight division of the event backed by eBusiness Services Inc., Osaka Iridology, DMC Busa Printers, Bantay Radyo, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, RCTV, Calmoseptine Ointment and Graphicstar.

Other UC gold winners were John Kenneth Ferraren, Zandro Cortez and Michael Bernard Miñoza.

On the other hand, the comebacking Filmocan Eskrima Club dominated the Open Division to finish behind UC in the overall tally with three golds and two silvers.

Filmocan is fresh from serving a suspension handed by the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (Wekaf) for disciplinary actions.

Filmocan’s gold-medal winners were Ritchie Quizon (heavyweight), Eduardo Feler (lightweight) and Dexter Legaspi (featherweight).

The Warriors Eskrima Club, composed of University of San Carlos fighters, Inayawan Arnis Club, Dumanjug Eskrima Club and Mandaue Arnis Club shared the third spot, all with two golds.

Eleazar Gamboa and Raymund Pisquero racked up the golds for USC, while brothers Lyle and Clyde Sales waled off with a gold medal each for the Inayawan Arnis Club.

Kawasan International Arnis Championship winners Louimie Tano and Jade Fe Ruben ruled the Girl’s Secondary division to give Dumanjug two golds. (ML)
