A celebration of life
By Nelia G. Neri
Eve

Cebu Cancer Fair 2004 unfolded at the Mandaue Sports Complex on a bright and sunny Sunday with cancer survivors and their families, doctors and care givers, friends and supporters all in attendance for a day of fun and fellowship. Beaming faces on the frontline were the project’s overall chair Dr. Dennis Tudtud and Dr. Noemi Alsay Uy, president of the Cancer Care Network of Cebu Foundation, Inc.,

And, indeed, it was a fulfilling day for all involved because not only was it fun-filled, it was a day of learning as well. The celebration began with Holy Mass officiated by Fr. Rae Cabalquinto and concelebrated by Fr. Dave Villaceran and Fr. John Sarchez.

Dr. Beatrice Tiangco, past president of the Phil Society of Medical Oncologists, spoke on “Cancer Update.” Then PHIC’s Loida Buaquina and Dr. Stella Warque of SSS talked about “Philhealth and SSS Benefits of Cancer Patients.”

The light moments came during the dance numbers and musical extravaganza. Beautiful songs were rendered by Dr. Ma. Luisa Tan and Jojo Rafaeles, Apple Abarquez, Natasha Cang, multi-awarded singer Elmer Cabahug and TV host Angelina Calina. Also dishing out their special brand of entertainment were super emcees Jude Bacalso, June Rabin and Icky Salazar.

Eyes popped out when fitness model Jackielou Blanco came onstage with her personal trainer Louie Angsico. “Winning Through Fitness” was their battle cry. Jackie later commented...”They (cancer patients) touched my heart more than what they think I gave. They gave much more to me.”

In the afternoon there were pocket sessions on different topics and interests - Energy Medicine by the Dept. of Health; Look Good, Feel Good conducted by skin care specialist Dr. Eve Therese Ramos, hair and make-up expert Ramil Solis and fashion guru Salvador Malto; Meditation; Cooking Demo by the Miller Sanitarium; Christmas Decor Making by Capiz Shells Phil.; Children’s Hour by the Bright Academy and the Phil. Oncology Nurses Ass.

The day-long affair formally closed with Pastor Daniel Trazo of the Miller Sanitarium Hospital leading the healing and closing prayer.

Cancer Fair 2004, the second fair of its kind in town, proved true to its theme which is to “Celebrate Life!”

NOTES

Coming up this Saturday, the 22nd, at the Grand Convention Ballroom, is Jam Session sa Cebu 2005, Simply Amazing 60s, a homecoming of sorts for the teen-agers of the 1960s who are now today’s decision makers. It will be a nostalgic walk down memory lane when Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, etc. reigned supreme over the air waves. Don’t miss this reunion! Dinner tickets are at P500. For reservations, call Graphic FX at tel. nos. 234-0048 or 234-0058.
