Rabaya coming up with stageplay

STAGEPLAY. Cebu’s topnotch playwright-stage director Allan Jayme Rabaya is coming up with another stageplay whose title and plot are taken from his very first entry to the 1981 Cebu Popular Music Festival. His most celebrated composition, Kausa Nabasa Ang Tubig, will be launched next month under the sponsorship of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts under the Office of the President. I tried to inquire from Rabaya as to the stars of his forthcoming presentation but he would not reveal any names yet. Rabaya only intimated that it’s a powerhouse cast and that the stageplay is something that could “stir” the local cultural scene once it opens to the viewing public.

FANTASTIC. From the looks of it, I could sense that Kausa Nabasa Ang Tubig is going to be a fantastic production. Expect a world-class presentation because Rabaya is tops when it comes to stageplays, no doubt about that. His previous works, including the Buhing Kalbaryo in 2003, were all amazing. His quest for perfection in all of his presentations is obvious. I also understand that after Kausa Nabasa Ang Tubig, Rabaya will start working on a video project entitled Ang Misteryo sa Balaang Inahan sa Guadalupe, obviously a production about Our Lady of Guadalupe and her miracles. There are plans to get the endorsement of the Cebu Archdiocese for this particular video project that Rabaya himself will screenplay and direct.

SUCCESSFUL. The silver anniversary presentation of the Cebu Popular Music Festival a.k.a. Cebu Pop last Jan.16 at the New Cebu Coliseum was a huge success. Those who watched it were one in saying that the Cebu Pop has, indeed, improved a lot in all aspects, especially in the musical accompaniment (One in Him Band) and overall presentation or production. After the show, several spectators told the organizers, “Kadtoy production, ngilngig!” Even Government Media Sec. Cerge Remonde vowed to have next year’s Cebu Pop broadcast nationwide live via NBN 4, RPN 9 and IBC 13. He chairs these three government television networks. By the way, last Friday, another show somewhere reportedly suffered a lot in terms of viewership as only a few came to watch it. All seats were not fully occupied despite the fact that the show was open to the public. Did I hear my good friend Philogene Florita say, “never ever compete with Cebu Pop?”

PRIZES. With the increase in cash prizes starting this year, I’m sure next year’s Cebu Pop entries would reach a thousand plus. The grand champion now receives P150,000 while the first runner-up and second runner-up get P100,00 and P50,000, respectively. Songwriters may now submit entries to the Cebu Arts Foundation, Inc. office at the University of the Visayas High School Department.

REUNION. What do you think will happen if you have Bernie Uy, Archie Marcial, Chad Borja and Eva Santos performing together – again? The four of them, who used to make up the once famous Zee Band, are staging a reunion concert for three straight nights starting tomorrow, Thursday, at Camp Z along A.S. Fortuna st. in Mandaue city. It’s a must-see reunion concert, something that rarely occurs here. For tomorrow’s show, tickets are at P250 each while for Friday and Saturday, it’s P300 each. Tickets are now available at Sol y Luna Ayala, Sunburst SM and Sunburst Capitol. For ticket reservations, call tel. nos. 346-6636 or 37.

DELICADEZA. This local sickly and aging broadcaster apparently doesn’t know the meaning of the word delicadeza. Despite his obvious physical difficulty, irritability and the habit of insulting his televiewers, the guy continues to host his program. (E-mail: samcost(at)yahoo(dot)com or text 0916-3483333)
