Cebuanos treated to P3.4M fireworks show
ASIDE from showing new varieties of pyrotechnics, last Sunday’s fireworks display sponsored by the Cebu Mitsumi Friendship Circle (CMFC) was probably the longest and the most expensive that Cebuanos ever witnessed.
The 50-minute fireworks display in the Cebu Business Park (CBP) took months to prepare and cost them about P3.4 million, Haruhiko Nagasaka, secretary of CMFC, said.
But what made it more special were the wishes for Cebu and the Cebuanos, which CMFC companies made with the launch of each set of fireworks.
Instead of hosting the display for Christmas or New Year’s Eve, they chose to conduct it during the 25th Sinulog grand parade since they expected that most of their employees and the Cebuanos would come to watch it.
Technicians
The P3.4-million cost covers the two big star mines, which were launched at the start and the end of the display, nine medium star mines and 1,600 other varieties of pyrotechnics.
They also brought to Cebu five Japanese technicians who set up the fireworks and manned the launching.
Toti Lim, CBP administrator, said they welcomed the offer of the group, which approached them about the fireworks display as early as November last year.
Lim estimated that over 50,000 people witnessed the display, which caused traffic to grind to a halt in the CBP area.
Half an hour before the show, another fireworks display also capped off the Sinulog grand parade in the Cebu City sports complex, signalled by a countdown that the crowd yelled out in unison.
The group behind the fireworks show in the business park hopes to sponsor another display next year.
According to Nagasaka, the group decided to host the pyrotechnics show in August.
