Editorials: Successful Sinulog

It’s a ritual almost as old as the Sinulog, this post-festivity assessment of the activity being the biggest and the best—and it has become amusing, or almost a joke.

But one can give it to government officials and organizers of the Sinulog for latching on to superlatives given the euphoria that follows every festivity.

The more meaningful assessment, however, is the one done when the smoke has cleared or once the euphoria has died down and all figures—crowd, cost, etc.—are in.

But without the statistics, the safest verdict is that this year’s silver anniversary version of the festivity was successful despite the hitches and peace and order problems.

In assessing the Sinulog, one must not be concerned only with the street dancing or the presentation before a very limited crowd at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Or even with tourist arrivals, which is the obsession of government officials.

The Sinulog is part of the celebration of the feast of the Sto. Niño, thus its success should also be measured on how it fostered the fiesta feeling in the residents and visitors.

Easily observable this year is the expansion of and increase in the number of Sinulog-related activities, thus whipping up the euphoria even days before the fiesta.

During the fiesta itself, the Sinulog Grand Parade, the fireworks in three major points of the city, mini-concerts, etc. made the atmosphere truly festive. This, though, cannot be considered solely as initiatives of the Sinulog Foundation or the Cebu City Government but as the accumulated contribution of various sectors.

This just shows that after 25 years, the Sinulog has acquired dynamism, much like the religious activity at the Basilica that has become a fiesta spectacle on its own.

In a sense, that spells success.

World class?
