Music teacher tops Rose rapid chess
By Mike T. Limpag

MUSIC professor Chris Castellano defeated Erwin Ababat in the final round to top the Rose Pharmacy Rapid Chess Tournament last Monday at the Handuraw Leisure and Learning Cafe.

A former champion of the Philippine Artists Chess Championships, Castellano tallied a near-perfect 6.5 points in seven rounds to top the contest, half a point ahead of Glen Pardillo.

Castellano, who hails from Cainta, Rizal, was part of the 15-strong Mania team that topped the Executives Chess Challenge over the weekend.

Pardillo defeated fellow Boholano National Master Elmer Sumngat in the final round to tally six points.

On the other hand, Jobannie Tabada took the third spot on tiebreak with 5.5 points. Tabada defeated NM Carlo Saludsud in the final round, while fourth-placer Leonardo Deza of Manila won over Jimson Bitoon and fifth placer NM Erning Fernandez of Pagadian City defeated Eden Diano.

Tabada, Deza and Fernandez, the champion of Friday’s Cepca Rapid Chess Open also at Handuraw, all finished with 5.5 points.

Five-time national executives champion NM Jenny Mayor took the sixth spot with Ababat seventh, while William Retanal Jr. took the eighth spot.

Mayor defeated Franz Cabe in the final round, while Retanal won over NM Arnold Cadiz.

Rounding out the top 13 finishers were Francisco Abugho, who defeated NM Elwin Retanal, Bitoon, Saludsud Kim Steven Yap and Eden Diano.
