Software project mgt. certification, competency assessment created

THE Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it), together with the Philippine Computer Society (PCS) and Project Management Institute–Philippine Chapter (PMI-Philippine Chapter), has signed an agreement to create the Software Project Management [Entry Level] Certification Standards (SPMCS) and the Software Project Management [Entry Level] Competency Assessment (SPMCA).

SPMCS is a common set of industry entry standards for employment. SPMCA is the entry assessment derived from the SPMCS that is designed to assess the recruitability, admissibility and acceptability of a candidate project manager or applicant for employment by the software development firms.

“Software project management is a very important skill in software development. But software project management is not well studied in school, so there is really a need to set the standards, and from the standards we develop the competency assessment,” explained Bonifacio Belen, executive director of Cedf-it.

The agreement is also supported by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) and is funded by the Pearl2 project of the Canadian International Development Agency (Cida).

A software project management training workshop on Feb. 7-11 will be conducted by Pauline Wade, software project management trainer, and by the Software Productivity Center of Canada (SPCC).

The workshop is open to all information technology professionals and practitioners. All those who join the workshop will take the SPMCA on Feb. 14.

With the new agreement, retraining by companies will be reduced because they can now depend on more competent and efficient software project managers.

Belen said the certification and competency assessment will be recognized not only in the Philippines but outside the country as well.

The partnership with Tesda will help in the curriculum development of technical schools because they will now be guided by the certification standards.(Emily Jade B. Valero)
