Toral: Online fraud database
By Janette Toral
Digital Filipino

Shared. Last month, I started exploring the idea of having a shared database of online fraudsters among online Filipino retail site owners who are also members of the DigitalFilipino.com Club.

The idea is to have a common list of buyer names considered to have engaged in transaction fraud by credit card payment gateway systems, so these identities do not continue to be abused in other local sites.

With a shared online fraud database, I can report names and other technical details of past attempts by fraud buyers. I can also use the same system to check out identities of new buyers in my gifts site and see whether I have a “hot” buyer that can be tracked down.

The idea was met with both excitement and reluctance. Some feared that the “special list” will leak out. These are challenges I believe can be overcome. Definitely, this project is going to be pursued with at least five pilot members trusting each other.

If done well, this can lead to the capture of these culprits and the filing of cases in court invoking Republic Act 8792, the E-Commerce Law.

Text your Friendster. If you are a regular Internet user, you are most likely a part of the popular social network Friendster.com. I met two friends lately who have been using the service to get to know business contacts and possible employees.

My sister got a project request to bid from a lady in Malaysia. She checked out whether this person has a profile in Friendster.com. She did and was able to get a glimpse of the appearance and personality of the person.

A friend in a call center is also using Friendster.com to screen applicants. Through it, he tries to find out the personality of the person and common friends.

It’s amazing how these technologies and tools have come to serve a bigger purpose.
