Couple appeals for help for baby Nayah’s surgery
By Charmaine Y. Rodriguez
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

A YOUNG couple is appealing for financial help for the surgery of their six-month-old daughter, whom they want to see grow up and live a full life.

Michael and Rolinda Mantilla, in a letter to Sun.Star Cebu, said their first-born baby Nayah Mikyl has been suffering from respiratory dysfunction due to a cystic mass.

She has been hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia at the Maasin District Hospital in Southern Leyte since she was three weeks old.

Rolinda, 30, a housewife, said she and her husband Michael, 33, a seaman who is in the country to attend to their daughter, need to raise P200,000 for the procedure.

“Please help us. Your kind and wholehearted support is what baby Nayah needs, especially now that the hospital wants us to pay first about half of our outstanding account before she can be admitted for surgery—the exploratory thoracotomy,” their letter read.

Distress

Their daughter has been confined at the Chong Hua Hospital since November. Their bill reached P210,000 as of Jan. 18.

According to the medical report of Dr. Sharon Uy, the baby is in respiratory distress.

Rolinda, in an interview, said they were only able to raise P50,000 and their resources are now depleted.

They need to buy P3,000 worth of medicines daily for their daughter.

They sought the help of the Department of Social Welfare and Development 7, which referred them to the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office for funds.

However, their application was questioned when the PCSO learned that the baby is confined in a private air-conditioned room.

Rolinda said they had no choice but to place their daughter in a private room since her condition worsens if she perspires.

“Nakasuway nami sa una nga dili aircon, sington gyud siya. Lisud kaayo (We’ve tried putting her in a non-aircon room but her condition worsened),” she said.

Rolinda said one may contact her at 0927-9443596 or Cleofe at 09172485761 or see them at the hospital.
