Nito says no to special polls in 5th district

THE Cebu Provincial Board and the governor are calling for a special election in the fifth district, but Danao City Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III, the area’s recognized political leader, is against the idea.

In an interview yesterday, Nito said people should be conscious of the fiscal crisis and should abide by the President’s call for austerity measures.

“Mauwaw ta. Personally, I’m against special elections,” he said.

It is the board’s sentiment that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) set a special election for the congressional seat vacated by now Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, Nito’s son.

Support

As the PB passed a resolution on the issue, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia also supports the body’s move.

“We should afford the constituents of the fifth district their deserved representation in Congress,” said the governor.

Also yesterday, San Francisco Mayor Al Arquillano expressed preference for an election in their district, although he admitted that projects still continue despite the vacant congressional seat.

“It’s better to have a special election because the regular one is still two years away,” Arquillano said.

Nito said yesterday that he made representations with House Speaker Jose de Venecia and he got some projects approved.

Still waiting

Comelec 7 Director Salud Aliganga, for her part, said they already informed their central office of the vacancy Ace left in the fifth district.

All they could do now is to wait for the action of the Comelec en banc.

Comelec Chairman Ben Abalos, who was recently in Cebu with President Arroyo, said they cannot call for a special election unless the Lower House declares the seat as vacant.

“If there is a declaration of vacancy, then that will be the time the Comelec will call and hold a special election,” Abalos had said. (JPM)
