Kwarta in finals
By Rommel C. Manlosa
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

M. Lhuiller Kwarta Padala broke the spirits of the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier in the final eight minutes of the game for a 106-76 win in the 2005 Mayor Tomas Osmeña Sinulog Cup International Basketball at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The victory, the Jewelers’ fourth in as many games, gave them the first spot into the finals. They could finish the round-robin elimination round spotless and they play against the winless Fujian squad of China in the main game tonight.

For the Nationals, they need to work extra hard to make the championship round when they play the resurging Quezon Province Coco Huskers, who toyed with Konkuk University of South Korea in the final half to post a 99-72 victory.

The other team that may still make it to the championship is the surprisingly strong North Cotabato, which will play against Konkuk University today. Wins by the North Cotabato Braves and the Huskers will create a triple tie for the second finals spot.

The Braves posted their second win in four games yesterday, beating the Fuijian quintet of China, 90-63.

The Jewelers and the Nationals fought closely for over 30 minutes, with the Nationals gaining some breaks going into the final quarter.

The RP squads’ patron, Jean-Henri Lhuillier, watched at the bench as the Nationals resisted the explosive games of John Grice and Bruce Dacia, climbing out of a 10-point pit twice before moving within a point, 67-68, in the early goings of the final frame.

But after Cebuano hotshot Gerry Cavan gave RP-Cebuana Lhuillier a good chance of making a complete comeback, the Jewelers unloaded a spell-bounding 38-7 blitz leaving the Nationals eating dust.
