Speak out: Mactan airport security By Marcelino A. Cordova Acting General Manager Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA)
This is in response to the airport concerns raised by lawyer Elias L. Espinoza in his column last Jan. 25 and 27.
It is unfair for him to state that the “MCIAA Board is not so concerned with the airport’s security system.” In fact, the Board has precisely instructed the airport management to immediately acquire two x-ray machines as well as repair the existing ones to bolster our airport’s security.
Moreover, the Board has directed management to increase the presence of security personnel and the K9 unit while also augmenting airport security by installing Closed Circuit Televisions.
And there is no truth to the insinuations that the Board is favoring suppliers of security equipment at the airport.
MCIAA abides by the provisions of RA 9184, also known as the “Government Procurement Act.”
The Board only takes action on bidding matters upon the recommendation of the MCIAA Bid and Awards Committee, which operates as an independent body.
On the lack of bidding for the hiring of a security agency, we wish to assure that MCIAA is already preparing the Terms of Reference for this particular item, a pre-requisite for a forthcoming bidding. In the meantime, the services of the existing security agency shall be terminated very soon.
As to Espinoza’s observations on the new parking scheme at the airport arrival area, we wish to inform him that motorists may only avail of this option for a maximum of two minutes per vehicle during actual flight arrivals.
Parking at this area is not available in-between flights when the arrival road is closed to all motorists.
