Quezon takes last ticket

The star-studded Quezon Province Coco Huskers made a daring comeback to score a 91-75 victory yesterday over RP-Cebuana Lhuillier and march to the one-game championship of the 2005 Mayor Tomas Osmeña Sinulog Invitational Cup at the Cebu Coliseum.

Meantime, the Jewelers’ second stringers showed they can do the job after finishing a one-sided 114-89 win over the winless Fujian squad of China in the main game.

Overtime

North Cotabato, on the other hand, missed its slim chance of entering the finals via triple tie after losing to Konkuk University of South Korea, 88-92, in overtime in the opening game.

Jeffrey Flowers plowed the shaded lane and Mike Manigo scorched the backcourt to lead the collection of marquee players from the northern teams of the United Regional Basketball League (URBL) to the last finals berth after picking two consecutive defeats.

Unlike their victims, who started the tournament strong by taking three straight wins before losing big games, the Huskers got back from an upset loss to North Cotabato and a taxing defeat to the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala before making their presence felt by nailing three straight wins to enter the championship round through the backdoor.

Quezon Province and the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier finished with identical 3-2 slates, but the winner-over-the-other rule gave the Huskers a chance to avenge their 92-104 defeat to the Jewelers last Monday and bring home the championship trophy.
