Suico to defend title in Cebu against Thai

ORIENTAL and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super-featherweight champion Randy “Kumo’ng Bato” Suico is set defend his title versus Thai challenger Muangfahlek Kiatwichean on April 19 in Cebu.

Suico’s manager and promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud is negotiating the venue for Suico’s fourth title defense after winning the vacant belt against the region’s 135-pound champion Sung Ho Yuh of South Korea on April 2003.

Venue

“The fight is already confirmed but we are still trying to negotiate for the venue. We will hold this either at the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Complex or at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug,” Salud said.

The WBC No.3 Suico, fresh from an eighth-round KO win over Ibrahim Aroby of Indonesia last October, holds a 22-1 win-loss record packed with 19 knockouts. His only setback was a frustrating defeat to Mzonke Fana in South Africa last April.

Visiting South African trainer/manager David Faas, Fana’s former manager, who is here for the Rey Bautista-Vuyisile Bebe’s WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight championship, believes Suico won the fight although the scorecards said otherwise.

Muangfahlek, on the other hand, who is currently ranked No.8 by the OPBF, is not a patsy. He holds a 10-4 card with seven knockouts and is Thailand’s 130lb champion. He has ruled the division since taking the title over Mahasamot Kiatpakpanung on Aug. 19, 2001 via a third-round KO.

He successfully defended his title twice against Mahasamot, the first on November 2002 and last October, both by second-round knockout.

Muangfahlek has lost his last two campaigns in Japan via unanimous decision to Takanori Kariya and Ryuhei Sugita.
