4 surgeons agree to return to CCMC

THE four Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) surgeons revoked their resignation yesterday afternoon after medical consultants promised to help them and lessen their workload.

CCMC Chief of Hospital Felicitas Manaloto said the consultants of the surgical department vowed to help the resident trainees while they are still hiring additional surgeons.

The resident surgeons are expected to report back for duty today and sign their contracts of residency at CCMC.

“We discussed their complaints and realized we just have to do a few things to make their work easier. The consultants will help us with the operation of the hospital. They will take turns in helping the resident doctors,” Manaloto told Sun.Star.

But in a phone interview last night, Manaloto admitted they still have a lot of things to do so their operations will return to normal.

Work overload

Services at their emergency room, operating room, outpatient department and other wards were affected since last Saturday after all four surgeons left their posts.

The resident surgeons complained of work overload since they have to attend to patients of the four departments on a 36-hour shift, although sometimes they work 48 straight hours.

“The best solution to this problem is to hire additional surgeons and the mayor is amenable to this. We are also looking at increasing their salaries to attract more applicants,” Manaloto said.

She added that for some months already, they have been hiring additional doctors but not one has applied yet.

Threat

Earlier yesterday,, Mayor Tomas Osmeña threatened to close CCMC one department after another if only to get the personnel to improve their services.

Frustrated over the problems at CCMC, Osmeña said he wants the city hospital to gradually close down even if it means drawing criticisms from the public and Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

“I’m really going to try to find a way for us to just shut it (CCMC) down. I know everybody will get mad at me, including the Cardinal, but every time I threaten to close it, that’s only when their performance goes up,” said Osmeña.

“I’m going to give instructions already to try to shut it down department by department as soon as possible,” he continued.

Instead of spending for the operations of the hospital, Osmeña said he will just provide the urban poor with Philhealth cards that they can use in other hospitals.

He also stressed that despite the problems at CCMC, he is happy with how Manaloto manages the hospital because she has implemented a lot of improvements there.

When Manaloto retires this March, Osmeña said he will make sure her replacement will be from outside CCMC so he or she will not have the attitude problem of other hospital personnel.
