Cebu City to look for other events

After Cebu City was put on the reserves list for the International Children’s Games (ICG) in Coventry, England, the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) is looking for another international tournament in the US, where the Cebuano athletes may see action.

“We are on the reserve list, but if we don’t get a spot, we’re thinking of looking for another international competition in America. Right now we are scouring the internet for tournaments,” Guardo said. “This is also what Councilor Jack Jakosalem wants.”

Early this week, Guardo received a letter from ICG administrative manager Emma Cowley that they are limiting the number of cities for this year’s edition in England.

Only Pinoy team

In the letter, Cowley said they will prioritize the neighboring countries in the meet set this July, but gave their assurance to CCSC that Cebu City is being considered on the reserve list should a slot be available.

Last year, Guardo and Jakosalem accompanied the Cebu City delegation to the ICG in Cleveland, Ohio. Team Cebu City was the only Filipino contingent in the event.

On the other hand, Guardo confirmed that Cebu City will join the Arafura Games in Australia this April.

“We have already given out the solicitation letters to the private sector. Since the City will be spending for a lot of events this year, I don’t think we can give the usual amount,” he said.

Last year, the City only spent for the allowances of the athletes, who took care of their own travel expenses. (ML)
