Chiongbian: Golfing tourneys just around the corner By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
JUST in case you haven’t noticed, it is already February and the year is 2005. Time sure flies doesn’t it? But don’t worry about it, March will be here before you know it because February is the shortest month of the year. No leap this year, so no special day for the Sadie Hawkins’ kind of girl.
And don’t forget that February is the code name for Valentines Day. It is very important for you to know that the wife is not thinking of Valentines Day but rather looking forward to a Valentines date.
Let us hope you know the difference. And as the saying goes, you are being forewarned so you can be forearmed. Get the picture?
The Ladies chapter at Cebu Country Club has a mixed twosome Valentines Day golf tournament scheduled on Friday the 11th so get ready to be asked. This is a ladies dance.
February is also a month of traveling for golf tournaments. The Southern Ladies Open will be played at the Pueblo Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro. The CCC ladies chapter president Ada Martinez will be towing a dozen or so lady golfers to CDO for the tournament scheduled on the 16th through the 19th.
Travel time also for the senior golfers to the PAL Seniors Interclub golf tournament in Bacolod during the last week of the month. The Seniors’ line-up has not been confirm as of yet. But the CCC Men’s team for the PAL Interclub has already been announced and they are: Carl Almario, Gene Aznar, Andre Borromeo, Go Kevin Choi, Eric Deen, Mark Dy, Montito Garcia, Jovi Neri, Nonoy Tirol, Marko Sarmiento and Raymond Garcia as alternate player.
Meantime, our RC Cebu Rotarians are ready for the International Match Club tournament at Manila Southwoods in two weeks. RCC players in our team are Joe Suaco, Manolet Heredia, Hector Almario, JiJi Gullas, Jun Ocubillo, Serge Romero, Tetsu Kawashita, Edward Gaisano, Jed Reyes and Ed C.
Congratulations to the winners of last Saturday’s Monthly Medal Tournament at CCC. The Class A championship went to Raymond Garcia with a net 64 from a gross score of 73. Runner-up honors went to “roomy” Tony Jackson with his net 66. Geoff Phoon conquered Class B with a net 65, off his historical low gross score of 80. Rene Almendras coasted to a net 66 and took the runner-up plum.
Class C champion Johnny Siao cruised the fairways with a 63, thus revealing the hidden talents he learned from his sparring partner Justin Uy. Benito Chia was in the humble position as runner-up in C.
Antonio Cañete came to play and blew everybody away with the tournament’s lowest score of a net 61. Marcelino Po licked his wounds in the runner-up position. Chiaki Endo won the Seniors trophy with a net 65. The guest division winners were Edsel Tan and Blake Go.
Does anyone know whatever happened to the Plantation Tee of Mercedes Plantation GCC and the Casino Español golf tournaments? We sorely missed them last year. I remember the first Plantation Tee golf tournament was so successful that the golf course was wall-to-wall golfers from the first hole to the 18th. There were no complains about the driving distance, so what could it be?
The Copa de Golf of Casino Español was also a very well attended event. Maybe the construction of the clubhouse took too much out of the committee. Now that clubhouse is all done, maybe we can expect to see the tournament back on schedule.
With a bunch of new members signed up, I can’t see how it could fail.
GOLF TIP: The knockdown shot is a very important arsenal in your bag of tricks, especially when you need a low-lying shot to go under tree limbs. Many golfers trying to hit a knockdown shot often smashes down on the ball, which increases backspin and ends up sending it high.
To avoid this, make a softer, more sweeping swing. Play the ball just behind center, set your weight on the left side, grip down an inch and turn the left elbow out toward the target at address.
This last move pulls the upper part of the left arm off the chest thus promoting a sweeping motion.
During the swing, keep your weight over the left side and your left elbow pointed to the target past impact. This shallow pass will give you a low spin and a low flying shot. (erc@skyinet.net)
