Ginebra goes up 2-0 By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
Barangay Ginebra claimed Game 1 in the Philippine Basketball Association boardroom. Last night, it clinched Game 2 on the PBA hardcourt.
Erik Menk’s barreling drive with 5.1 seconds to go powered Ginebra to a 106- 105 victory over the gritty Talk ‘N Text in Game 2 of their best-of-seven finals series for the Gran Matador-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Menk, who registered 27 points and 11 rebounds, went on to anchor Ginebra’s defensive alignment that forced Talk ‘N Text’s Willy Miller, who topscored for his team with 24 points, into throwing a tough fade-away jumper in the ensuing play as Ginebra hung on for the win.
The victory puts the Kings up 2-0 in the series following the PBA board’s decision to nullify the Phone Pals’ 89-71 Game 1 win last Tuesday. The PBA Board awarded Game 1 to Ginebra after the Kings protested Asi Taulava’s return in Game 1 despite the uncertainty of his citizenship status.
Fired up by its success in the boardroom, Ginebra came out like gangbusters in Game 2 and registered a scorching first-half run, as it shot 28-of-41 field goals and 6-of-7 triples en route to erecting a 67-54 halftime lead.
Down by a sizeable margin and facing a 0-2 series deficit, the Phone Pals clawed back in the third period behind the outstanding performance of Mark Telan, whose breakaway dunk with 8:03 to go in the period put an exclamation point to a 12-4 run that trimmed Ginebra’s lead to five, 71-66. (GCM)
