National Team scrimmages continue

THE Philippines’ quest for Asian basketball supremacy continues.

The training pool for the RP Men’s basketball team resumed its workout last Tuesday, with 12 of the 39 invited Philippine Basketball Association players in attendance.

The 12 – Brandon Cablay, Joachim Thoss, Mike Cortez and Don Allado of the Alaska Aces, John Arigo of the Coca-Cola Tigers, Kerby Raymundo and Noy Castillo of the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs, Nic Belasco and Dondon Hontiveros of the San Miguel Beermen, Rich Alvarez, Billy Mamaril and Tony dela Cruz of the Shell Turbo Chargers – who already took the requisite physical fitness test last week, participated in a light scrimmage-type session at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Center.

National Team head coach Chot Reyes and assistant coach Aboy Castro oversaw the workouts, still in its preliminary stage of determining the appropriate positional alignments of the players.

“Danny S (Seigle) and Ali (Peek) are going to the States and Danny I (Ildefonso), I understand, is hurting,” said Castro, who along with Reyes just arrived from a scouting trip in China and South Korea. “We were able to watch some of the top players of Korea and the two new players of China, including their young seven-foot center.”

The rest of the invited players, except those whose teams are playing in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals – Willie Miller, Mark Telan, Yancy de Ocampo and Jimmy Alapag of Talk ‘N Text and Eric Menk, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand and Andy Seigle – are expected within the week. (GCM)
