PP2 Roadshow
Taking a stand for the family, this artist takes Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano records the itinerary thus far.
“Art is not only about beauty but goes beyond it”, the painter Celso Pepito believes.
That’s because his art also carries an apostolate mission calling for the strengthening of family values and virtues. To make them accessible to the public’s eye, he embarked on four exhibits he banners “Strong Family: Foundation of a Strong Society”. Fresh from the first leg of the show at the Art Gallery of the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon city (Dec. 6-31,2004), he is all set to open the second of the series at the SM Art Center on Feb. 23 to March 9.
His quadro of traveling solo shows will cover the three main geographical divisions of the country, starting with the just concluded show in the national capital, moving here for home court advantage. The last two installments will be viewed at the Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro city on April, and Gallery J at SM Davao in May.
With this schedule, imagine how busy he will be. And keep in mind his whereabouts, so you’ll know where to find him. This year is, without a doubt, Pepito’s most hectic. The souvenir brochure he prepared for the exhibit contained snippets of his personal history. He narrates that as a young boy in Bukidnon, he used to spend his weekends helping in the cornfields.
In elementary school, the drawings of his teacher Panfilo Moreno inspired him to follow his artistic inclinations. His college life in Cebu was spent at the University of the Philippines fine arts program obtaining his degree, which he got in 1981. Now, almost 25 years as a full-time professional artist, his art has brought him to places like New York, U.S.A. and Luxembourg.
With several solo shows to his credit and group exhibits held left and right, Pepito is by and large the most prolific and active artist in Cebu. On his visual call, he looks forward to make his art more useful and meaningful by choosing to focus more on the importance of close family relationships, the values of hard work and love for the environment as the favorite subjects of his paintings. To him, the art exhibit is “simply a visual reminder, a loud whisper and a continuing call for all of us to always consider the importance of the family in order to attain a strong society”.
