Foreign, local companies unite to provide Wi-Fi service in Cebu

THE companies that worked together to make Cebu the first city in Southeast Asia to be Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity)-ready have established a new company that will roll out the Wi-Fi service in the province.

According to Dominion Wireless Broadband Access (DWBA) marketing manager Jed Fidellaga, DWBA is the product of the collaboration of US-based companies Tropos Networks and Aperto Networks Inc., Manila-based Protocol Century Inc. and Cebu-based ASA Enterprise Corp.

“DWBA will bring wireless connectivity to Cebu,” he told Sun.Star on the sidelines of the firm’s event at the Mango Square mall Friday.

Mango Square is the first company that expressed interest in becoming a hot zone or a Wi-Fi-ready area, Fidellaga said.

Wi-Fi is a facility that enables a computer to connect to the Internet without using telephone lines.

He said Mango Square and its collateral areas, including Gen. Maxilom Ave., Capitol, Chong Hua Hospital, Fuente Osmeña and the area near the Redemptorist Church, will be hot zones until March 30.

This means anybody with a Wi-Fi-ready device, such as a notebook, laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA), can access the Internet in these areas.

DWBA will launch the commercial subscription after March 30, when the company will ask for a P1,000 monthly fee for individual subscribers.

Companies and residential communities or subdivisions can also apply to become Wi-Fi zones. Different rates will be asked for different subscription types, Fidellaga said. (JBN)
