Serna: A better venue next time By Roger Serna Sounds & images
As in previous years, Cebu City residents will be blessed with one more holiday, today being the city’s Charter Day, in addition to the national commemoration of the first Edsa revolution tomorrow.
Activities are lined-up for the two consecutive holidays, some of which are being excitedly awaited for by our brothers and sisters who are not only hopeless stargazers but are also on the lookout for chances to get a break from all the suffocating tasks to eke out a living.
All work and no play makes one a dull person, right? So, let’s relax and enjoy once in a while. This weekend promises to be a longer and more exciting one.

The gravel section of SM City Cebu’s parking area teemed with people, especially those living in the proximity, last Saturday with the staging of Eat Bulaga in Cebu. The Manila based noontime variety show holds out-of-town stints apparently to keep itself closer to its audience in the provinces.
The question that bugged me, though, was more of the choice of venue than anything else. If the intention was to endear itself to the Cebuano audience, why did it have to be held in open air at a time when the sun is at its fiercest?
Honestly, had I not been given a press pass by the SM City Cebu PR department (thanks, Aicha T.), I would not have dared brave the scorching heat. It was a torture, to say the least.
Funny, but a friend who came with me to watch the show failed to recognize the Sex Bomb dancers who were gyrating and bouncing on stage for most of the duration of the show.
That friend expected tall and statuesque female dancers, as they seem to appear on TV. He later felt frustrated when he realized the oversight in failing to point out some of the ladies whom he had learned to admire on TV. Ha-ha! Better luck next time!

Was it a usual sight to see regular members of the show obviously trying hard to synchronize their dance steps with the real dancers? They looked as if they rehearsed their numbers a few minutes before the show.
Was it because they had not enough time to rehearse or because they don’t have a high regard for the Cebuano audience? Danica Sotto, Iza Calzado and Paolo Ballesteros had to practically struggle with their routines, notwithstanding the fact that the music was a very familiar one. Even school children that watch TV shows regularly can very well outperform them anytime.
Oh, when the 25 Bb. Pilipinas candidates were introduced inside SM City later that day, with Paolo being tasked to serenade them, he had to request for up to a third retake when he could not make the right start to his song number. What a letdown!
Anyway, the show was still successful despite the hassles (with one person returning home P50,000 richer in the Laban o Bawi segment). To the organizers, please give the Cebuanos a better venue to enjoy the show to the fullest the next time around.

You can accuse me of bias right now but I really believe Cebuana candidate Melanie Ediza has a fat chance of grabbing one of the three crowns that are at stake in the fast approaching Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant.
She has the beauty, the figure, the height and the brains as evidenced by her winning the Ms. Cebu title in 2002. Her public appearances as a fashion model and as program host can very well help her in her quest.
But she should not be complacent as the other candidates are also ready to grab any opportunity afforded to them. Some of those whom I considered strong contenders are candidates Nos. 8, 18 and 23. Melanie carries No. 15.
No. 13 is pretty and tall (she’s the tallest, in fact) but there seems to be something awkward or, shall we say, far from perfect, with her body proportion that I cannot seem to figure out at the moment.
Still, anybody can steal the limelight away from the others given the right opportunity. So, may the best ladies win and eventually make the country proud once again in the international stage.

A privilege card (one with a soul, as the providers say) will be launched in time with the staging of the puppet musical show, Mr. Noah’s Big Boat, in SM Cinema 1 tomorrow.
Cardholders become members of AXS Kids. The card is an access pass to fun events, the musical show being one of them. Membership is one year and for only P300 and that already entitles cardholders to freebies and discounts at some establishments.
Drop by Provalue Inc. at the mezzanine of IAS bldg. along Gen. Maxilom ave., for details. That’s where Kalidades House of Flowers is located.
