Jealous man shoots wife dead, then kills self

Driven by jealousy, a husband shot dead his wife before killing himself using a super .38 pistol in Tabogon, Cebu Tuesday night.

Tabogon Police Chief Carmelita Condevillamar said the fatal shooting happened in full view of the couple’s nine-year-old boy inside their house in Barangay Labangon.

Demar Rios Monterola, 34, and his wife Cherrylyn, 30, left behind five children, the youngest of whom is four months old, Condevillamar said.

Argument

Prior to the incident, Demar was reportedly having a drinking session with friends in a nearby store when Cherrylyn arrived and scolded him.

When the wife went home, Demar followed her, resulting in an argument. The fight was said to have been triggered by the husband’s jealousy.

Moments later, neighbors heard two gunshots, prompting them to enter the house.

Condevillamar quoted the couple’s nine-year-old boy as saying that Demar shot Cherrylyn before shooting himself in the head.

Cherrylyn died on the spot.

Residents rushed Demar to a hospital in the neighboring Bogo town but he did not make it alive.

Condevillamar said Demar would usually open up the topic about his wife’s alleged affair with another man while she was working in Cebu City.

Frat violence

Meanwhile, lawmen are looking for two alleged members of Tau Gamma Phi for allegedly shooting and wounding a tricycle driver in Barangay Calajoan, Minglanilla town.

Police identified the victim as Ian Saavedra, 26 of Sitio Kalubihan, Calajoan, who was reportedly wounded in the foot.

Police said the shooting followed after Saavedra, who was on his tricycle, almost reportedly hit a certain Jennell and his unidentified companion past 9 p.m.

Luckily, Saavedra managed to leave the area when the suspects shot him. (GC)
