NBA All-Star ‘shoe-case’

*Basketball’s superstars paraded the newest batch of top-of-the-line shoes during the NBA All-Stars – see what suits your personality and fits your pocket

CHICAGO – They have this notorious fetish for shoes. It matters not whether it’s a product by Prada, Gucci, or Marikina, they love them all. I’m talking about women, of course. Their hearts may be cold but they sure want their feet warm.

Women almost always never fork up the money during a dinner date, but give her a pair of shoes that fits her like a princess and she’ll pay you a king’s ransom.

Some men resent women’s love affair with shoes, others think it’s nonsensical considering that a very naked Eve once prowled the Garden of Eden with nothing except her bad judgment and bare feet.

But sulk not, boys. Instead of bitching about your woman’s feet-related desires, why don’t you play the game, too, and spend a fortune on a wide array of sneakers that were “shoe-cased” during the 54th All-Star Game last Monday.

Let’s begin with the best-of-the-best. Ray Allen was the lucky guy to model it and it’s a Nike Air Jordan XX. The first Air Jordan, which stoked the flames of a shoe revolution, was launched in 1985, thus the XX for its 20th anniversary.

I’ve seen the shoe, touched it, felt it. Soft as melted butter. This pair costs $175 and just like His Airness, Nike’s Air Jordan XX is flying off the shelves.

The next best thing is the Nike Shox Bomber, and you don’t have to be a Jermaine O’Neal fan to love this. It’s my personal favorite. Although its sole has the characteristics of a running shoe it’s built to withstand pounding. The price, $140.

Kobe Bryant has a shoe, too, and its a Nike Air Zoom Haurache 2K5. Whether the wearer will suddenly develop a tendency to not pass the ball after he laces up, I don’t know. What I know is that it costs $130.

Adidas, Nike’s main competitor in the “shoe wars” also has some nifty products. Its banner shoe is the T-mac 4.5 dubbed as the first laceless performance basketball shoe. It costs $125. I don’t know about you, but I like mine with laces. It’s the Coke to my rum.

D Cool

Other notables from Nike’s chief rival include the Adidas A3 Garnett ’05. I saw it, touched it, felt it, hated it. Especially the color, which is largely white with specks of blue. I’d never buy one even if I were drunk. Definitely not for $110.

There’s also the Tim Duncan Adidas D Cool 2 for $90. It’s very ordinary, so unlike Tim.

Yao Ming and Allen Iverson paraded the Reebok Pump ATR. It retails at $100 and its actually nice. But a pump? Please, it’s so 1980s.

Here’s the rest of the selection: Amare Stoudemire’s Nike Air Force Operate ($90), Grant Hill’s Adidas Feather ($75), Antawn Jamison’s Adidas A3 Forum ($100), and Gilbert Arenas’ Adidas GDL. ($70).

So, if you wanna piss off your wife or girlfriend, tell her: “Honey, I’m shopping for shoes and it’s gonna cost a fortune. For a change, you’ll finally know how I feel each time you come home with those boxes of shoes in arms.”
