BIR awards big tax payers

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Monday recognized the taxpayers that paid a billion pesos or more in taxes last year.

During the launch of the bureau’s nationwide Large Taxpayers Service (LTS) 2005 tax campaign at the SM City Cebu trade hall, these awardees were identified as Smart Communications Inc., Philip Morris Philippines, San Miguel Corp., Pilipinas Shell and Philippine Geothermal Inc.

The other awardees for the other categories included Norkis Group, Mirant Philippines Inc.,

Taiheiyo Cement Co., M. Lhuillier Pawnshop and Philippine Savings Bank-Makati Branch.

The BIR envisions that 60 percent of the bureau’s total collections will come from large taxpayers and that a massive portion of other taxpayers’ data will be captured and monitored through the database of these large taxpayers.

Officer-in-Charge of the LTS Kim Jacinto-Henares said the BIR is working hard to inculcate in companies the value of paying the right taxes so that the bureau can leave the companies alone.

The launch of the 2005 tax campaign was held in line with the third anniversary of the BIR’s Large Taxpayers District Office (LTDO)-Cebu, which caters to the large taxpayers in the Visayas and Mindanao.

In a report, LTDO-Cebu Chief Jonathan Capanas said the office collected P5.78 billion in taxes last year, surpassing its 2003 collection of P4.863 billion by P917 million and its 2004 collection target by P162 million. (JBN)
