A night of beauty and talent

Orly J. Cajegas wears a missologist’s hat as he chronicles the southern exposure of beauties. Charles Nikolas Buenconsejo captures beauty as its own excuse for being.

It’s the pageant season, again. And this time around, the whole of the Philippines (most especially Cebuanos) will be glued to their boobtubes come March 19 not only because a former Miss Cebu (candidate number 15 Melanie Ediza) and the reigning Miss Lapulapu (candidate number 24 Lois Montes) are vying for three prestigious crowns (namely: Bb. Pilipinas Universe, Bb. Pilipinas World, Bb. Pilipinas International) but also because this year’s set of candidates are reportedly one of the strongest batches in terms of beauty and, hopefully, brains.

Any missologist can rattle off some names and numbers of candidates and their corresponding fearless forecasts but this scribe narrows them down to just five based on the talent’s night presentation which was held at the Casino Filipino Mactan. Although out of the 25 official candidates only 10 were brave enough to conquer the stage (and stage fright) to showcase their talent, the other candidates were just content at applauding them in their seats.

Three rendered song numbers, four danced (modern, ethnic, Tahitian, and a retro) and two declaimed. So, in the spirit of the mythical magic five, here’s an unofficial rundown of the memorable numbers:

Miss Talent: Hands down to candidate number 1, Wendy. Not only was she very visually appealing (the prettiest, if I may say so) she was also aurally beautiful. She sang a ballad that made the audience forget she was just doing a cover song (it might as well be her own. See? Up to now I couldn’t place the original singer). I’ve never seen anyone sing this great in recent history (including the so-called Star in a Million). Then it was announced that she is, after all, a professional singer, and was once a finalist in the GMA Metro Star Search in 1997. Clearly, her star shone brightly and effortlessly.

First runner-up: the very refreshing candidate number 8, Carlene. Her spirited dance number (very Fifties, complete with polka dots and three colorful balloons tied to a chair) floored a lot of the audience and can only be described in one word: fantastic. It was obvious that she was enjoying herself tremendously, too. No wonder she was awarded the Norkis Star of the Night.

Second runner-up: the statuesque candidate number 12, Marie May. She dared to sing a Regine Velasquez song (Minsan Lang Kitang Iibigin, originally sang by Ariel Rivera), which was admittedly an ambitious number to pull off.
But there she was, charming the audience with her very morena looks as she sashayed, nay, glided down the ramp.

Third runner-up: our very own Miss Lapulapu, candidate number 24, Lois. The terpsichorean in her proved that she could groove, too. She danced an RnB medley together with two [cute] male back-up dancers. And she got rhythm.

Fourth runner-up: the unperturbed declaimer, candidate number 21, Stephanie. She deserves [honorable] mention because she was very focused on her declamation piece (which was about the fight of good versus evil). Half of the audience was amused, half was annoyed. But bravado just the same. Commented a seatmate: thought this was only done in prep school. Commented another: uy, di baya na lalim. Precisely!

This is the pageant season, after all. Without the unforgettable booboos year in and year out, we might as well doze off to dreamland.
