Costanilla: Share your talent in ‘Salamat sa Musika’ By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
SONGS. If we have to commend a local television program that tries its best to preserve the richness of the Cebuano music industry, it is none other than Salamat sa Musika, which is aired every Saturday, from 8-9 in the evening, with a replay every Monday at 12 noon, on Cebu Catholic Television Network channel 47. The same weekly program can also be seen over Skycable 56.
Salamat sa Musika intends to uplift the Cebuano music scene by featuring local talents, both professionals and amateurs, to perform purely Cebuano compositions in the hope of encouraging the viewers, specially the young, to appreciate their beauty and magnificence. Veteran songwriter-arranger Agelio “Titing” Ceniza of Kabanhawan fame and songbird Ester Alferez are the people behind the weekly television musical presentation. The former is the guest coordinator and the latter is the program host.

GUESTS. Salamat sa Musika has already featured a number of local singers.
This is worth mentioning considering that these people, despite their hectic schedule and heavy workload, have not rejected Ceniza’s invitation to appear in Salamat sa Musika as a manifestation of their full support for the development of the Cebuano music industry. It is hoped that this presentation will be sustained as a long-term program and that other television networks emulate its example. Ceniza is constantly searching for local talents who’d like to be featured in Salamat sa Musika. Why don’t you volunteer and share your singing voice with the rest of the public? Text me and I’ll introduce you to Ceniza.

TRADITION. When one mentions Sugat as an Easter Sunday observance, what immediately comes to mind is Minglanilla town. In the same breath, when one mentions Minglanilla, what comes to mind is its being the Sugat capital of Cebu, Visayas and Mindanao – or maybe even Luzon. The Easter Sunday observance in Minglanilla has become an important part in the lives of all Minglanillahanons since this practice has been a tradition since it started in 1889. Since then, the Sugat sa Minglanilla has become a major crowd drawer, a favorite must-see religious offering. But a number of concerned Minglanillahanons have decided to make the yearly Sugat something more attractive, more pleasing and more attuned to the modern times, thus, the decision to “modernize” and “stylize” the Easter Sunday celebration effective this year.

FESTIVITY. Their immediate concern is to introduce and stage Sugat sa Minglanilla, starting this year, as the town’s pambato – as a major religious, cultural and tourism attraction. With this in mind, the Minglanilla local government unit, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and the Parish Pastoral Council, headed by Mayor Eduardo Selma, Msgr. Esteban Binghay and Bebot Abella, respectively, have decided to join hands in presenting the first ever Kabanhawan Festival, a day-long festivity that the general public would definitely enjoy celebrating. In other words, starting this year, the Sugat will not only be the dawn presentation that shows the meeting of the risen Christ and the jubilant Virgin Mary. Instead of going home right away, the public will also be treated to other must-see activities like games, an afternoon street parade, a band showdown and other fun-filled attractions. The March 27 celebration will be completed with the colorful fireworks display and disco dancing from 8 p.m. onwards.

OUSTER. The other officers and members of this pseudo media club here are now working to eventually oust their former president whose actuations do not conform to the group’s principles. They also cite the guy’s lackluster leadership during his term, saying he did nothing to improve the club’s already tarnished image. (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or text 0916-3483333.)
