Unlicensed butchers banned

In its bid to get accreditation from the National Meat Inspection Commission (NMIC), the Cebu City Government banned unlicensed butchers from the abattoirs starting yesterday.

Only 70 of at least 212 butchers secured the documents required by the City.

Those who used to slaughter animals at the Lorega-San Miguel abattoir, which the City shut down, were accommodated in the remaining abattoirs.

But they were told to refrain from returning to their old ways called narik or laplap, where they surreptitiously cut meat from inside the butchered animals.

If they violate the terms, they will no longer be allowed inside the Carbon market abattoir and the Cebu City Modern Abattoir (CCMA).

Dr. Alice Utlang of the Division of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) said the new measure was implemented to comply with NMIC requirements so the City will get an AA standard classification.

She said they are just implementing the provisions of City Ordinance 1644, or the Meat for Public Consumption Regulation Ordinance.

“Ang atong palisiya sugod karon (yesterday) kay no ID no entry sa mga butchers,” she said.

She said the City used to be accredited by NMIC, which evaluated last year the City’s abattoirs and made several recommendations.

The abattoirs used to be under the market authority’s supervision but Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, in an executive order December last year, transferred them to DMVF’s care.

Utlang said that for butchers to be accredited, they have to secure health cards and police clearance.

The police clearance is important since the butchers always carry knives when dealing with City employees.
