Yap: Jr. Kilat By Januar YapM Meanwhile
My first image of him came some ten years ago. He was this quiet foreground of his own painting, a portrait of a large intestine stuffed heavily with cathedral windows. Covering an entire wall in Gerard Pareja's library-cum-hangout, the thing he called "tinai' was a dreamlike rendition of the digestive system as seen through a kaleidoscope. That year, the guy's painting graced the PLDT Yellow Pages' cover. Some legends are born in silence.
Last weekend, I made it a point to see how the kid was. He was to have an album launch. On a mall's hallway once, an effusive cub yelled at me, "Hoy, agta, nag-unsa ka diha?!" That proved it, Budoy has become a household name, along with "Ismol Tym," his RCTV show that must've taken good 'ol Tado's cue, and his incendiary new band Junior Kilat.
It's not as if I haven't heard of Budoy for a long time. We're in the same millieu, and Gerard P. and I must've sat down with him as he billfold the rudimentary verse for "Original Sigbin." Can't recall exactly. Who would've predicted that from that manifold yellow pad paper would thus spring forth the miracle called Junior Kilat? Some legends are born in silence.
Junior Kilat is largely Budoy's charisma. It's all in the band members' (Tiano, Archie, Gina, Diana, Cleofas, Bangin, Jad) faces as they await Budoy's, to use Gina's phrase, "unpredictable antics."
It's all in the faces of every Budoy fan, waiting for this man-child-of-the-earth to hoist another sigbin's head from out of the blue.
Kilat is, of course, team work, too. The old songs have been embellished with sounds at once ethereal and earthy, studied and serendipitous, qualities of work solely possible with inspired geniuses. The new album "party pipol ur on dub tv" hits you with combination punches with Budoy delivering the final blow into the breadbasket.
I won't even begin quoting another Junior Kilat song. "Matud ni Titing, molamoy og kanding, mokaon og uling...kay original sigbin!" There it is anyway.
