GSM becomes last team to get foreign import
JUST in the nick of time.
Barangay Ginebra finally found an import yesterday with its hiring of former Georgia Tech shotblocker Eddie Elisma, who now completes the roster of imports for the 2005 PBA Fiesta Conference.
Elisma’s arrival gave a huge sigh of relief to the Ginebra ballclub, which was on the verge of entering the PBA Fiesta Conference – which opens on Friday – without an import after a month-long search.
The 6-foot-9 Elisma, however, could be one of the smaller imports of the conference, which does not have a height limit for the foreign reinforcements.
A returnee who played for Purefoods last season in the Fiesta Cup, Elisma is scheduled to fly in on Thursday, fresh from a stint in the Chinese league.
Elisma is No.3 in the all-time shot-block ladder at Georgia Tech behind former NBA star John Salley and ex-Phoenix Sun Malcolm Mackey.
After ending his collegiate career, Elisma was picked 41st overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1997 NBA Draft.
Now a veteran of international hoops, Elisma has played in Israel, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Elisma has also played in summer leagues with the Sonics and the Toronto Raptors.
Elisma is slated to engage in low-post battles with Shell’s 7-1 Eric Chenowith, Coca-Cola’s 6-11 Ja Ja Richards and San Miguel’s 6-11 Chris Burgess, Talk ‘N Text’s 6-10 Earl Ike, Alaska’s 6-9 Leon Derricks, Red Bull’s 6-9 Dalron Johnson, and FedEx’s 6-9 Anthony Miller. (GCM)
