RP volley team plays Macau today at USC Gym

Despite a short two-month preparation, Team Philippines isn’t concerned about facing Macau in today’s opener of the 2006 FIVB Men’s World Volleyball Championship first leg at the University of San Carlos Gym.

“The team was formed last January, but I’ve seen the eagerness and the willingness of the players, I want them to play seriously against Macau,” RP head coach Vip Isada said.

“I can’t say how good our changes are, but we all have a chance,” Isada said during yesterday’s press conference at Cebu Midtown Hotel.

The Philippines’ starting six, all seasoned players who are also members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines team, are Herminio Gallo Jr., Cesael de los Santos, Gino Macailan, Avelino Tongco, Edcer Penetrante and Benianmor Lingat, Ariel de la Cruz, Janley Patrona, Dante Alinsumurin,

Jerrico Hubalde, Willy de la Cruz and Jeffrey John San Jose. All of them are at least six-foot tall.

“It’s important to start our campaign with a big win. So, we can’t take Macau lightly. We have to play a strong game,” said Isada, who will be assisted by Letran coach Ernesto Pamillar.

The Philippines will next face world No.36 Chinese-Taipe tomorrow then six-time Southeast Asian Champion Indonesia on Friday before closing out its campaign against Tonga on Sunday. (ML)
