DUMAGUETE City—Sacred Heart School-Jesuits and Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology suffered contrasting fates yesterday and both need to win their respective games today to advance to the quarterfinals of the 59th National Students Basketball Championships Secondary division here.

The Baby Skyblazers erected a 53-38 lead at the bend and survived a very physical game to pull a 69-63 win over the Bohol Institute of Technology at the Silliman University Gym, while the Jesuits were simply overwhelmed by the taller and seasoned Philippine Christian University Junior Dolphins 105-51 at the Zamboangueta Gym.

PCU, the third placer in last year’s NCAA, devoured the Jesuits, who are on their first national tournament after ruling the 2nd ML Kwarta Padala Cup-Developmental Basketball Tournament’s Aspirant division.

The collective effort of 6-foot-1 Antonio Carlos Datan, 6-3 Arturo Lao, 5-6 Vincent Dizo, 5-7 Patrick Jacobe and 5-9 Elddie Cabahug was no match against PCU’s giants.

The Junior Dolphins had the 6-9 Al Hussaini, 6-8 Guidaben, 5-11 Frances Ruñez, 6-foot-4 Allan Mangahas and 6-foot-1 James Mangahas as starters.

PCU’s second stringers is made up of 6-7 Ed de la Torre, 6-6 Mark Sarangay, 6-5 John Manlutac, 6-footer Jules Flores and 5-10 Patrick Enriquez.

“It’s already a big achievement for the boys. SHS-J played against an NCAA team and this is a championship-caliber team,” said coach Hermogenes Anciado.

Just when the Junior Dolphins were about to break away by 70 points, Dizo connected on two triples and Cabahug fired three of his four 3-pointers in the final quarter to bring down the lead to 54.

Meanwhile, the Baby Skyblazers, who will be playing without Anjo Cadungog against the St. Claire High School of Caloocan City. Cadungog fractured a shoulder blade after being hit by the elbow of a BIT player.

PCU (105) – A. Mangahas 22, de la Torre 14, Sarangay 11, Ruñez 10, J. Mangahas 10, Manlutac 9, Guidaben 8, Hussaini 8, Flores 5, Buno-an 4, Zapanta 4, Enriquez 2. SHS-J (51) – Cabahug 14, Datan 10, Dizo 8, Lao 8, Tancinco 5, Jacobe 4, Villa 2, Gajudo 2, Locaylocay 1. Quarterscores: 29-13; 59-20; 84-36; 105-51.
