Smart turns over van to Iloilo Red Cross

Leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) recently donated a van to the Philippine National Red Cross-Iloilo city Chapter, in response to the chapter’s need for an emergency response vehicle.

The vehicle donation is an initiative of the Panay/Negros-based Smart Red Cross employee volunteers.

A partner of the Red Cross since 1998, Smart has been providing the humanitarian organization vital communications support through cellular and satellite phones. It has supported the organization in assisting typhoon victims in the provinces of Quezon, Aurora and Nueva Ecija.

It has also trained about 200 Smart employees in disaster management and first aid and organized teams of volunteers to coordinate emergency relief activities during crises situations with PNRC.

Iloilo City Councilor Ramon Cua-Locsin, PNRC Iloilo Chapter chairman, expressed his gratitude to Smart for the vehicle donation.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Trenas, who was also present in the turnover ceremony, said that the vehicle donated by Smart will go a long way in helping the local Red Cross chapter respond better to emergencies.

“It is the first time for Smart to donate a vehicle to PNRC. PNRC Iloilo Chapter is its first recipient. With the donation of the emergency vehicle, we are bringing our partnership with PNRC one step further” said Maria Jane C. Paredes, Public Affairs Manager –Vismin during the turnover rites.
