GARY. It’s been a long time since Gary Valenciano, a.k.a. Mr. Pure Energy, last performed in Cebu, and his fans have been asking as to his next concert here. So his upcoming show, dubbed “Gary V Hits Cebu” on Thursday, March 10, at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, should be a must-see presentation. Gary’s concert is for the benefit of the poor children of Kamagayan and Lorega that the Cebu City Alliance Church and Alliance Biblical Seminary is supporting through their Loving My Neighbor Student Center. In other words, the concert is for a very noble cause, which all of us must fully support. On Thursday, Gary will sing a number of his inspirational selections, plus the performances of his sons Paolo and Gabriel and other special guests. Tickets are at P1,500, P1,200, P1,000, P500, P350 and P200. For more details, call tel. no. 253-5567 or cell phone no. 0917-3204020 and look for Zaldy.

EXCITING. Several activities have been lined up to make this year’s “Kabanhawan Festival” an exciting daylong observance in the town of Minglanilla, the country’s undisputed “Sugat” capital. The March 27, Easter Sunday celebration is not just a simple community undertaking – it is also a global collaboration since a number of Minglanillahanons, who are now based abroad, have vowed to financially support the festival aside from the fact that most of them are actually coming home any day this month just to watch the annual event. Mind you, this is the first time that such a spectacular Easter Sunday festivity will be seen in Minglanilla – thanks to the municipal officialdom and the parish leadership for joining hands in coming up with such a grandiose celebration.

ACTIVITIES. The “Kabanhawan Festival” in Minglanilla starts with a 2 a.m. procession of relics, to be followed by the “Sugat” mass which be celebrated by Msgr. Esteban Binghay at the Immaculate Heart of Mary church patio. The actual “Sugat” or the meeting of the risen Christ and the jubilant Mother Mary will follow. The other activities after the “Sugat” are the drum and bugle showdown, obstacle Easter egg hunt, higante contest, carabao race, mud volleyball, on-route décor competition, variety show and embroidery competition. The evening activities include the recognition of outstanding Minglanillahanons, the Kabanhawan dance drama, fireworks display and disco dancing. Minglanillahanons abroad who want to get in touch with the “Kabanhawan Festival” organizers for their financial support are encouraged to call or text or send me an e-mail. Their assistance will be receipted and properly acknowledged.

CLUBS. Leaders in the barangays should take the lead in encouraging young people to form community-based drama clubs and to join them. This is a surefire way of diverting the youth’s attention from vices and other non-productive activities. Once formed, the community-based drama clubs can become income-generating ventures with talent fees that members can receive from the people who invite them to perform during barangay celebrations, like fiestas and anniversaries. This is also one effective way of encouraging the youth to hone their acting, dancing and singing skills. Out-of-school youths are particularly encouraged to take part in these community-based drama clubs. I have friends who are willing and ready to assist them in forming these clubs.

PAY. A news hen from an English tabloid here has been telling her counterparts from the other dailies that their paper gives the highest pay to reporters. Of course, nobody believes her. Some of the tabloid’s writers and photographers have resigned and have transferred to the number one daily in town. (Email: samcost(at)yahoo(dot)com or text 0916-3483333.)
