MMA main event ends in controversial victory By Rommel C. Manlosa
RANNIE “The Warrior” Ballesta of Komiyokai Aikijutsu Martial Arts Club used his wily techniques in a controversial submission win over Ryan “The Predator” Solana of the Yaw-Yan Martial Arts Club of Lapu-Lapu City in “Only The Strong Survive II” Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Ballesta caught Solana with a guillotine choke in the first round and referee Jonaz Azarcon declared Ballesta the winner after Solana failed to answer when asked if he could continue.
The scheduled three-round superfight ended in 3:06 of the opening round despite heavy protestations from Solana’s corner.
Solana alleged that Ballesta used a thumb on his throat while holding him in a guillotine choke, causing him to breakaway from the grapple and grasp for air at his corner.
Neck mark
But Solona’s plea for Ballesta’s disqualification was to no avail as he, amid the confusion, failed to show Azarcon the indented red mark on his neck that could have given the match officials an idea of what had happened.
Meanwhile, Adamson “The Assassin” Torbiso of the Durex Kickboxing Club of Lapu-Lapu City dethroned Allan “The Dancing Man” Epile of the Yaw-Yan Soma Martial Arts of Mandaue City for the kickboxing 135-pound title via split decision after five rounds. The score read, 146-142.
Torbiso, who was in control most of the fight, finally settled the score after their first championship match ended up in a majority draw in Placer, Masbate last Feb. 19.
Meanwhile, Engie “The Destroyer” Piloto of Yaw-Yan Martial Arts endured a deep gash on the cheek but defeated Edmund “The Beast” Vergara of Arcomjukai Kickboxing Club by submission in the first round of the listed three-round MMA fight.
Vergara was in control but Piloto saw a little window, which he quickly grabbed to execute a rear-naked choke that forced the smaller Vergara to tap out.
While Richard “The Lion Heart” Tan, also of Yaw-Yan Martial Arts, won by third-round TKO over Romulo Dobe Jr. of Arcomjukai Kickboxing Club in the Mixed Martial Arts Entertainment Inc. promotion backed by West Flavored Lambanog Cocktail, Rep. Raul del Mar, Gastripac and Cebu Channel 28.
Tan made up for Tan’s loss in the first edition with a referee-stopped contest against Romulo Doble Jr.
Tan had the upper hand all throughout the fight, countering Doble’s powerful strikes by forcing the action on the ground. Tan managed to get an arm lock on Doble, but the striker managed to escape and was saved by the bell.
In the second round, Tan successfully made a full mount on Doble and delivered a flurry of punches in the face before the referee stopped the match.
A wobbly Doble had to be helped by Tan to get up and was escorted off the ring.
In the first match-up of the night, Aileen Teng stopped Jovelyn Geotoro in the third round. The 28-year-old Teng, who began fighting last October, won the fight after Geotoro turned her back in the middle of an exchange, forcing the referee to step in.
On the other hand, Rene Noblefranca scored a quick win over a burly Jess Cahutay. Cahutay cut Noblefranca in the lower eye with a vicious punch but Noblefranca answered with a vicious right to the jaw that put Cahutay on his seat.
Another left by Noblefranca again brought the bigger Cajutay down, forcing his corner to throw the towel in.
In the other kickboxing matches, Bernaldo “Titing” Cabusas also won by TKO over Carlo “The Silent Man” Ventic of Ventic Kickboxing Club (160lbs), Reynaldo “The Eskrimador” Combate of Multi-Style Kickboxing Club of Mandaue City won by third-round TKO over former lightweight champion Jonathan “El Terrible” Arobo of Durex.
