TCC-Tennis wins eight of nine titles

TEAM Cebu City-Tennis members waxed hot in yesterday’s Thirsty Tennis Cup finals, snaring eight of nine championship titles at the Cebu Country Club.

The fast-rising Sally Mae Siso led the way in TCC’s blazing campaign in the tournament as she secured two championship diadems in separate age-group divisions, adding more hardware to her mounting collection.

37 winnings

The 10-year-old pride of the University of San Carlos improved her winnings to a total of 37 championships and nine runner-up finishes in two years.

Fresh from a successful campaign in the Milo Junior Tennis Championships, Sally Mae once again whipped her older rivals to bag the diadems in the Girls 14-Under and 16-Under.

Sally Mae, who hoarded three championships and a runner-up finish in the Malaysia Juniors International Open last December, copped her first title yesterday after beating her older sister Sallydine, 6-2, 6-1, in the Girls 14-Under category.

The top-ranked player in the Philta Girls 12-Under division, Siso, also bested her older sister in the Milo finals.

Her next victory came in the tough 16-Under cluster. Ironically, she got the title the easy way after Dumaguete’s Kirsty Barraquias withdrew from their championship match due to a stomach upset.

Unisex

Also bagging the top plum for TCC Tennis was Jacob Lagman, who dumped John Marie Gelbolingo in the Unisex 10-Under finals, 6-1, 6-1, while another TCC netter, Christian John Cabahug, dominated his twin brother, Christian Paul, in the Boys 12-Under finals, 6-0, 6-2.

The sensational Bernadine “Niño” Siso, registered a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 marathon victory to topple Jayvee Canoy in the Boys 14-Under.

James Carl Cañete also clinched a championship for TCC as he ruled the Boys 16-Under with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Julius Lagman, along with Janji Soquiño, who bested Israel Denn Cimafranca of the University of the Visayas, 6-3, 6-2, in the Boys 21-Under finals.

TCC’s Jin Querubin, on the other hand, topped the distaff side with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lovelie Soquiño.

The lone non-TCC player to win a title was Crissiane Kintanar, as the Argao, Cebu-native demolished Kimberly Traeger, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5, in the Girls 12-Under. (JSV)
