USC Alumni nips Mulbachs
By Mike T. Limpag

IT SEEMS coach Eleazar “Elying” Toledo can’t win one against his wife Rodora and the University of San Carlos Women’s team.

For the second Sunday in a row, a team Eleazar coaches lost to USC in the Aboitiz Women’s Open yesterday after the Cebu International School lost, 5-0, at home.

Last week, La Niña Guerrera, with Elying as the head coach, also lost to USC, 0-3. Elying coaches the CIS Ladies squad together with Mike Smith.

Double win

It was a double win for the Carolinians after the USC Alumni scored a 1-0 win against Mulbachs FC, which started the match with only 10 players.

Rodora found a streaking Marlou Solon in the fourth minute and the wily Solon got past Danica Ronquillo to put USC on top, 1-0. CIS tried a reply but a shot from a striker off Mara Reina’s nice cross merely sailed wide.

USC doubled its lead in the 30th after Rodora sneaked one in past Ronquillo and scored again in the 37th. In USC’s fourth goal, Rodora collided with Ronquillo, and both stayed on the ground, while Valerie Rafanan walked the ball in.

All doubts on whether Elying’s loyalty lies with his wife or his team were erased when he quickly rushed to help his stricken goalkeeper after the collision.

While the first game was so lopsided that USC keeper Janice Salandron didn’t get to play defense in the first half, as it took Mulbachs 20 minutes to get into the USC half, which was promptly cleared.

Cristina Fuentes scored the lone goal in the 35th after getting past Charito Tan, who’s numerous saves prevented a rout.

Late arrival Tanya Chica suited up in the second half, and the USC ‘keeper finally had a piece of the action after saving a shot by Chica.

Despite the loss, Mulbachs and CIS will move to the semifinal round together with the two USC teams.
