Nalzaro: A symbol of a strong woman
By Bobby Nalzaro

MARY ANN Castro is, indeed, a very controversial figure. Siguro sa iyang pagkatawo ning madangog nga kalibutan, gikaluhaan na siya ug kontrobersiya. And controversies are still hounding her. Few years ago, she figured in a much-publicized love affair with former photographer turned businessman Zandro Agusto.

The Mary Ann-Zandro love affair which was like to a tele-novela, however, did not last long. On the sidelines, Zandro’s legal wife, Cherry Basalo, died in what police described as a cold-blooded murder perpetrated by a policeman. Mary Ann was partly blamed for the incident because if she was not engaged with Zandro, Cherry’s brutal death could not have happened.

After the Agusto affair, she was again rumored to be romantically linked to a police officer, then to a head of a police investigating unit and just recently to a prominent lawyer. Well, there is no legal impediment if Mary Ann falls in love with anybody because she has been legally separated from her husband. Although, the court decision on her annulment is being questioned.

Only her profession would suffer because people would always question her integrity and credibility. They accused her of immorality. But at least her heart is full of love and she is very much inspired. Dili nimo ikabaylo ang naghiguwaos nga gugma. Kamo bay mahigugma, lalim ba?

But Mary Ann’s agony did not stop there. She was also involved in some controversies in her profession. She was accused of accepting a bribe from a lawyer in connection with a sensationalized drug case. She was alleged to have used her power and influence in threatening a surplus dealer and lately got dragged by two young Chinese businessmen to a fight over a parking issue.

But despite those controversies and agony, Mary Ann was able to weather all these. She is a fighter. She managed to live, both in her personal and professional life, in the face of all those trials and sufferings. She is a symbol of a strong woman. If Mary Ann possesses a weak heart, she could have committed suicide after experiencing those nightmares.

Armed with “talent and beauty,” she got fast promotion, caused envy among her colleagues at the prosecutor’s office.

Now, Mary Ann faces another challenge in her life. She is the subject of a protest by no less than her colleagues in the legal profession and by some non-government organizations that strongly opposed her possible appointment as Cebu City prosecutor, claiming she is not fit for the position because of her past records and background. Hangtod asa ug hangtod kanus-a ka magmanilawon, Mary Ann Castro?
