Red Bull deals SMB’s first loss By Jade S. Violeta
RED Bull dealt San Miguel its first loss of the conference as the Barako prevailed over the Beermen, 94-90, yesterday in the Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Red Bull’s victory, which tied it with its victims on top of the heap with a 2-1 win-loss slate each, became a rousing welcome for assistant coach Jay Abanilla, who took over the job from Yeng Guiao after the latter was ejected from the game following two quick technical fouls with 5:10 left in the third period.
Heroes
Iligan City-native Cyrus Baguio was one of Red Bull’s heroes as he banged in nine of his 13 points in a crucial stretch, including a booming trey that doused San Miguel’s fiery run in the 2:28 mark of the final period to cop the Best Player of the Game award.
Baguio also grabbed four rebounds and went 5-out-of-6 from the line.
Import Dalron Johnson, although he wasn’t that active offensively, also contributed big for Red Bull’s cause after sinking all four of his free throws that gave the Barako breathing space in the final seconds. He finished with 17 points on top of 16 rebounds.
Villanueva
“Raging Bull” Enrico Villanueva also had a great game for Red Bull, which led at 25-23 after the first quarter.
Villanueva had 12 points and nine boards, including a key rebound in the last 4.7 seconds, while Vergel Meneses added 11 points and three rebounds.
Leading the Beermen, 49-41, at the bend, Red Bull stretched its edge to 11 early in the third.
