Babayeng Buhat
Women are afire this month, as Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano fans the flames of praise more.
There can’t be a men’s month, but certainly the women are privileged to have one of their own every March. And to celebrate this, women always have a special way of marking the Women’s month.
Cornering the heat of the month or moment (no pun intended as this is also shared with the observance of the month of fire prevention) local women poets and visual artists were quick to come up with something exciting and revealing of their current thoughts and feelings. They have joined hands to collaborate in a show of paintings vis-à-vis literary expressions called Babayeng Buhat at the Ayala center to present varied female issues and concerns that’s perhaps unprecedented in the past. It was a relief to see that women artists aren’t only good in painting flowers. There were fine strong works that show both the personal and societal concerns in visual and large formats.
A varied theme that ranged from women in serene contemplation, the daily grind, to artworks that invite tactility reflects the vitality and heterogeneity of women’s art. A finely-executed oil by Lurline Rodriquez is a peaceful scene, deep in meditation that’s set in a personal sanctuary complete with a grotto and lush garden. Sonia Yrastorza remains consistent to her desired medium as a watercolorist. Hers is a magnification of a scene we often take for granted, seeing it as too mundane; we get to see it almost everyday as we walk past the ambulant vendors she depicts. The alternative one is Janine Albulario’s. She made an interesting assembly in mixed media.
Her artworks are displayed back-to-back, there’s one of an intimate female world made of dolls and sanitary napkins while at the other side is a stark contrast for it’s massive masculinity. Fifteen paintings by 15 artists were hung alongside framed poetry by members of Women in Literary Arts (Wila), each piece singing a paean to all women.
