Serna: Evangelio once more directs ‘Buhing Kalbaryo’

Don’t you wonder why I’m writing about Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago? This column falls under entertainment, right? So, that’s precisely why.

I was just entertained by the feisty senator when I caught her on television being interviewed regarding how the Philippines landed second to Indonesia as Asia’s most corrupt country, and how she argued (with that distinctive intonation, accent, diction and all) that the country should be on top of the list, suspecting a mistake in the ranking and demanding “a recount (!).”

What a statement! For sure, many televiewers shared my amusement at that time. For sure, you can feel the sarcasm through the humor. If you ask me, the honorable lawmaker has a point. The following day, one of former President Erap Estrada’s sons, San Juan mayor JV Ejercito, echoed the senator’s sentiment by adding that it’s “because of the Arroyo administration’s blatant abuse of power and misuse of our treasures.”

I almost choked. Then, I felt my entrails turn inside out. Don’t ask me any further. Awrrk!

Again, friends of Search for the Star In A Million contender Ryan Racal, who are working in this paper, are asking for my support to help the Cebuano attain his dream and eventually be another pride of the corn-eating-people of the South.

They say that among the three contenders who say they come from Cebu, it’s only Ryan who’s a real and true-blue Cebuano. Okay.

So, for Smart, Talk ‘n Text and Addict Mobile subscribers (am not sure yet if Globe users can vote, too), text STAR ryan and then send to 231. Mission accomplished, huh, Sun.Star Cebu divas?

Concert Queen Pops Fernandez was in town recently, not for a concert tour, but for a business trip. She was promoting her own garment line, Pipay, which is now distributed by First Quadrant and met members of the Cebu media, particularly those in the entertainment beat.

Pops is the latest addition to First Quadrant’s celebrity endorsers along with Kris Aquino, Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin, among others.

When we dropped by First Quadrant, upon the invitation of its execs, we were amazed at the wide array of products it is selling. In addition, the products are of high quality and are quite in vogue.

One of these days I might drop by again for a different purpose. To do business, perhaps. Who knows?

After having been absent twice in a row from the urban scene at this time of the year, award-winning playwright-director Alvan Claude Evangelio returns to the helm of Buhing Kalbaryo, which he originated and directed for a number of years.

For the first time, the play will be staged in the evening of Holy Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Cebu City Sports Center. Rumors have it that the organizers gave a go signal, expense-wise, on the creation of a realistic set design for this phase of the play.

On Good Friday, the play will be restaged at the same venue starting at 11 a.m., segue to the Via Crucis along V. Rama ave., all the way to the Guadalupe church grounds for the crucifixion and the seven last words.

Include this in your Holy Week itinerary. Or, need I tell you?

One of the latest happenings in Cebu that created quite a stir, especially among movie enthusiasts (more specifically those that are into making movies themselves), was the so-called Filmless Film’s .Mov: International Digital Film Festival.

Actually, it was an extension of what was held in Megamall Manila through the effort of the organizers in the persons of Khavn dela Cruz and Chitz Jimenez.

The Cebu Filmmaker’s Society, which also initiated the campaign to help revive the Cebuano film industry, saw the event as an instrument and another venue in motivating and encouraging independent digital moviemakers towards it and thus, enthusiastically supported the event.

The successful event was held at the SM City Cebu Cinemas 1 and 5 last Mar. 2 to 8.
