Gullas, Soc: ‘We’re not quaking in our shoes’

A possible showdown with the Osmeñas in the 2007 elections does not bother political allies Rep. Eduardo Gullas (Cebu, 1st district) and Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez.

“The Gullases, in contrast to some political families who think that they are God’s gift to the people, do not believe that they (Osmeñas) are indispensable,” read a press statement from Gullas’ office faxed to Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Fernandez, on the other hand, said Cebu City Councilor Gabriel Leyson is not known in Talisay.

But Fernandez admitted that with former Mayor Dehlia Tiu and former Vice Mayor Lani Abarquez on Leyson’s side, the latter could be an opponent.

“Kanang kahadlok bunga kana sa kahakog sa gahom,” Fernandez said when asked to comment on Leyson’s support from former Sen. Sonny Osmeña and Minnie Osmeña, sister of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

Monumental projects

Though he acknowledged that the Osmeñas are political figures in Cebu, Fernandez said it cannot be denied that Gullas is also regarded as the father of the development in first district.

“He (Gullas) has a lot of monumental projects, which are his strong assets against Minnie,” he said.

Minnie is reportedly eyeing to run against Gullas.

Minnie’s and Leyson’s name surfaced in Talisay politics amid a row between the two City Governments over a portion of the South Reclamation Project (SRP).

Tomas has denied prodding Minnie and Leyson to take over Talisay from Gullas and Fernandez through an election.

Blame Sonny

Unresolved boundary dispute and the defeat of Sonny’s son, former vice governor John Gregory Osmeña in the 2004 gubernatorial elections have apparently brought estranged cousins Tomas Mayor Osmeña and Sonny to a common goal – taking Talisay away from the Gullases.

Sonny had accused Gullas of deserting his son at the height of the election campaign.

But Gullas said in the press statement that if someone is to blame for John-John’s defeat, it is Sonny himself because he torpedoed his own son’s candidacy.

He said he gave his support to John-John from the time he encouraged him to run for Cebu governor until the election ended.

“It is unfortunate that Sonny Osmeña is endorsing Leyson and Minnie for the wrong reasons,” the press statement said. (AIV)
