CDO Stars upset Laguna in tune-up tourney

The Cagayan de Oro Stars dropped the upset axe on the fancied Laguna Spring, 98-93, Saturday night in the Sulpicio Lines-NBC Pre-Season at the Asian College of Science and Technology in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Stars had to claw back from a 10-point deficit midway in the third period to pick up the win.

The Spring led, 69-59, on Val Domingo’s basket before former Iloilo Warrior Carlos Sayon Jr. and enforcer Jerome Numeran led a 15-4 run for the Stars to forge a 74-all deadlock going into the fourth quarter.

No gas left

Laguna, which led from the start, ran out of gas in the fourth quarter against the sleek running game of the Stars.

All-Star forward Jayson Alfeche came alive in the pivotal period whre he scored all of his nine points, five of them in the final 40 seconds, to seal the victory.

“It was a morale-boosting win for us. But definitely, we have a long way to go from being a strong contender since this is just a pre-season game. We caught them on an off-night,” Stars’ coach Andy Calingin said.

Sayon and Numeran combined for 47 points to pace the Stars.

Former University of the East center Jhayson Alminario scattered 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting to lead the Spring.
