Mandaue National Science High gets chess tilt finals slot

After topping its division last Saturday, Mandaue National Science High School earned a finals ticket in the Bokal Vic A. Maambong 3rd Inter High-School Chess Tournament.

Mandaue NSH claimed a finals berth after its tandem of Joemar Montecillo and Apple Grace Pobadora posted 1-0 wins over Pagsabungan NSH’s Gerald Degamo and Toni Ann Veloso in the Mandaue division finals at the Pakna-an NSH Gym last Saturday.

Besides Mandaue NSH, the finals cast includes Lanipga NHS, which ruled the Consolacion division, Babag NHS and Bankal National HS, which will represent the Lapu-Lapu/Cordova divisions.

Tiebreaker

Babag and Bankal qualified for the finals after both finished with identical 8.5 points in the Lapu-Lapu division, however, Babag was declared the champion via winner-over-the-other tiebreaker.

The finals is scheduled on April 2 at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, the Marcelo S. Ruelan Memorial Open Chess Tournament is set to kick off on March 19 at the Bibo Chess Club.

The two-day event, which employs the seven-round Swiss System format, is open to rated, unrated and titled players. Each player is granted 20 minutes to finish a game with an increment of 10 seconds per move.

Opening day

The opening three rounds is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on opening day while the last four rounds will be staged the following day, Sunday, March 19.

Interested participants may contact Marvin Ruelan at 412-1076 or Linky Yap at 09176404088 for more details.

The tournament is backed by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca), Southwestern University, Sto. Niño Review Center, Rose Pharmacy, Atty. Jongjong Melendez and Cebu Progress Marketing. (GCM)
