Nevada boxing body orders thicker gloves By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.StarStaff Reporter
Manny Pacquiao might be in the best shape of his life when he fights Erik Morales, but he may be a little uncomfortable.
This, after the Nevada State Athletic Commission ordered both fighters to use thick-padded gloves when they collide in “Coming With Everything” on March 19 (Match 20 in RP) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Pacman” is comfortable with the thinner Cleto Reyes gloves, which he has been using since 2001, than with the NSAC-recommended Winning brand, which Morales uses. Both brands weigh the same at eight pounds, though.
Contract
“We cannot do anything about it. A contract reads as a contract reads,” Roach was quoted at www.mannypacquiao.ph, while watching his prized fighter spar before a mammoth crowd wearing the Winning brand.
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, was obviously disappointed when he received a call from NSAC Commissioner Marc Ratner, withdrawing the permission earlier granted to Pacquiao to use the Cleto Reyes gloves.
Stated in the fight contract, both boxers will wear the Winning gloves that Morales originally chose.
“Manny was allowed to used the Reyes gloves but it turned out Bob Arum negotiated with Murad (Muhammad) and they agreed to what Morales liked,” Roach said.
It was a move Murad, Pacquiao’s promoter, made without consulting Roach. Arum, Morales’ promoter, is the main promoter of the card and it was Morales’ brittle hands that reportedly prompted Arum to call for the gear change.
But the Filipino whirlwind assured Roach, the 2003 Ring Magazine Trainer of the Year, that wearing the new gloves wouldn’t matter since he uses heavier and thicker gloves during sparring sessions and it doesn’t affect his power much.
