Digital Filipino: Losing the thrill By Janette Toral Digital Filipino
FIGHT. I was one of the many Filipinos throughout the world that anxiously awaited Manny’s fight versus Morales.
However, prior to the start of the fight, if you are an Internet user, monitoring several boxing sites will immediately give you a perspective on whether he won or not.
What amazes me about boxing websites is their quickness to update their Web pages. Some even give a round by round account of what actually happened.
Locally, you have sites like www.mannypacquiao.ph that give you an update on the fight as soon as it is finished.
I discovered this site while watching the fight of Pacquiao and Marquez the last time. Since I got impatient about finding out what would eventually happen, I went online and discovered that it was a draw!
Last Sunday, 15rounds.com was doing an update regularly as the fight progressed. On visiting the site, the fifth round had just finished and the writer blogged that Pacquiao got cut (through a head butt).
Afterwards, most boxing sites bogged down because of heavy traffic.
Fortunately, there was www.hardcoreboxing.net that showed a round-by-round account. After reading it, I realized that the fight was over. Morales had won by a unanimous decision.
At that time, the local TV station was showing an earlier under-card fight. We still watched the whole fight between Pacquiao and Morales but more to find out how it happened.
I was disappointed with the blogging community then. As I was monitoring blog updates at www.pinoyblog.com, I was hoping some boxing fanatics based abroad would actively blog about the whole fight as it progressed. Most blog updates came out after the fight, not during.
Internet Anniversary. On March 29, the Internet community is encouraged to do its share in celebrating the 11th anniversary of the Internet in the Philippines.
On my end, the Internet anniversary is marked this year by three activities. First is the Asia Pacific Network Information Center ISP training on Internet Resource Management this March 30-31 with the support of the Development Bank of the Philippines Data Center Inc.
The Philippine Schools Cyberfair 2005 award ceremony is scheduled on April 1.
The winning teachers will participate in the ICT for Educators workshop on April 4 to 8 with the support of Microsoft Philippines and University of the Philippines Information Technology Training Center.
