FBMA builds catamaran
THE Aboitiz-owned FBMA Marine Inc. facility in Balamban, Cebu recently constructed its biggest vessel so far, the Vlieland.
The Vlieland was ordered by leading Dutch ferry operator Rederij Doeksen of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Ambassador to the Philippines, Robert Vornis, visited FBMA to witness the finishing touches being made on the ship.
The 64-meter vehicle and passage catamaran has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure. It incorporates a drive-through vehicle deck with bow and stern access for easy vehicular handling and rapid turnaround in port.
Passengers
It can accommodate up to 1,300 passengers, has a VIP lounge, tourist class saloons, a separate bar area, and a large open sun deck. It also features a separate play area for children.
The vessel can carry 60 vehicles, FBMA said in a statement.
ISO 9001:2000-certified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance, FBMA won the contract to build the vessel against strong competition from other international shipyards. Sea Transport Solutions of Queensland, Australia designed the ship.
FBMA Marine is a wholly owned Aboitiz firm. The shipyard opened in Balamban in 1997 and has since delivered high-speed ferries and patrol boats to international clients. The company employs 500 people.
